California law requires that when a child is removed from their home, relatives are searched for and if found, contacted and informed about the child's removal.

The Family & Children's Services Kinship Program

Provides temporary placement of children in a safe, nurturing family environment with relatives or extended family members, when their parents cannot care for them. Offers care until the child can be reunited with his/her parents or adopted by another family. If possible, foster children are returned to their birth families, or through adoption, placed permanently with another family.

Santa Cruz County Kinship Support Service Program (KSS)

Provides a free program designed to provide resources and support to help improve outcomes for families formed through kinship care. KSSP Santa Cruz is funded by Santa Cruz County, HSA and offered in collaboration with community-based service providers.
